Initial Assessments in the learning support tab

The Learning Support tab on a learner's profile in Console contains an Initial Assessments section. This section displays the results of a learner's Functional Skills initial assessments and is the primary place to view this information at a glance on the learner record.

What the section displays

The Initial Assessments section shows the outcome of each Functional Skills subject assessed (typically English and maths). For each subject, you will see:

  • the subject area (e.g. English, maths)

  • the result or level achieved

  • the date the assessment was completed

The section will only show results where they have been recorded — either manually or via an integration. If no assessment has been completed or recorded yet, the section will appear empty.

How results are recorded

Results reach the Initial Assessments section through the FS Initial Assessment activity type on the learner's learning plan. There are two ways results can be recorded:

Via a Functional Skills provider integration (BKSB, Skills Forward, or CENTURY)

If your organisation has set up an integration with BKSB, Skills Forward, or CENTURY, results are recorded automatically once the learner completes their assessment through the integration:

  • BKSB and Skills Forward: The FS Initial Assessment learning plan activity acts as a placeholder. Results are automatically populated in the Initial Assessments section once the learner completes their assessment. For results to populate automatically, the learner must access BKSB or Skills Forward through the activity link on their learning plan — not by logging in directly to the provider's platform.

  • CENTURY: Learners complete their initial assessment as part of the onboarding wizard. Once completed, results are automatically recorded and visible in the Initial Assessments section.

Manually

If your organisation does not use an integration, or if a learner's result needs to be recorded outside of the integration, you can record results manually.

Manual entry can only be completed within a review where the "Functional Skills" section has been enabled.

Here you can enter the assessment date, and score that the learner received for both initial assessment and diagnostic results.
