You create competencies and add them to a programme in the Competencies token in Programme Builder. Competencies added to a programme show on learners' skills radar.

Create a competency set
- In the Competencies token, select Manage competencies.
- A list of your current competencies opens. Some may have been set up for your organisation during implementation. Select Create.
- On the Add competency page, either add competencies from a standard or framework you've set up in a programme, or create your own with Add characteristic.
- Name the set and save it. It's added to your list.
Note: characteristic names can be up to 500 characters. Aptem doesn't warn you when you reach the limit, so take care with long titles. Put extra detail in the Additional Information field, or split it into a separate characteristic.
Add competencies to a programme
- In the programme's Competencies token, type the name of the competency.
- Select it, then select Add competency. The option is greyed out until you select a competency.
- Confirm and save your changes.
Adding a standard's competencies to an onboarding programme
You can only create competencies from a standard that's set up on a delivery programme. To use them on an onboarding programme:
- Make sure a delivery programme has the standard added in its Learning plan token.
- In Aptem Classic, open the Competencies token and select Create.
- Enter a name and select Add from standard/framework.
- Select the delivery programme, tick the standard and select Add Characteristics.
- Save the competency.
- Open the onboarding programme's Competencies token, type the competency's name, select it, then select Add Competency and confirm.
Who can see a programme's competencies
Every competency you add to a programme is available to every learner on that programme. You can't restrict a competency to specific learners at programme level, but you can assign competencies learner by learner. You can also assign competencies by sub-programme where required.

Deleting a competency
If you delete a competency, it's removed from every learner, including learners who have already completed it.
