Overview
The skills radar captures a learner's competency level and tracks their progression throughout the programme. Within each programme, multiple competencies can be added to measure a learner's current skill level against the KSBs (knowledge, skills and behaviours).
Learners can self-assess against each competency, which can prompt a conversation with their tutor. Tutors and employers then complete their own assessments through the review process. Each assessment is date-stamped and should be repeated throughout the programme.
The skills radar is visible to the learner, tutor, and employer.
Setting up employers to view or edit the skills radar
An employer's access to the skills radar is controlled by the permissions set against the skills radar section of a learner review:
- Can view: the employer can see the skills radar but cannot score competencies.
- Can edit: the employer can score competencies, add notes, and upload evidence.
Where an employer has edit access, they can also see the learner's and tutor's scores against each competency.
If sections of the skills radar are greyed out for an employer, their access is set to Can view. To let them score competencies, change the employer's access for the skills radar section from Can view to Can edit in the programme's Reviews token.

Making the skills radar mandatory for employers
Tutors can set the skills radar to be mandatory for an employer. When enabled, the employer must score every competency before they can save and close the review. If they attempt to save with the skills radar incomplete, a warning message appears and the review will not close.
If the skills radar is mandatory and the employer is completing it for the first time, all competencies must be scored before saving.
Employers and the onboarding skills radar
The skills radar in the Onboarding Wizard is a one-off assessment of whether a learner is suitable for a course. Employers can't edit it. They can only view it, from the skills radar section in Aptem Console.
To let employers assess the skills radar on an onboarding programme or a delivery programme, add a review type that includes the skills radar section, and set the employer's access to Can view or Can edit. Set this up on each programme that needs it.
See A How-To-Guide to the Onboarding Wizard.
Which competencies show
The skills radar only shows competencies on the learner's current programme. It doesn't show:
- competencies, or skills radar data, from a programme the learner was on before
- competencies that were removed from the current programme, even if the learner was assessed on them.
To show competencies from an earlier programme, either:
- add them to the learner's current programme, or
- create a sub-programme with those competencies and add it to the learner, or
- add the then individual competency to the learner in their User profile
To add competencies to a programme, see Create competencies and add them to a programme.
Navigation and screen layout
To view a learner's skills radar, select Skills Radar from the learner navigation menu.
You can also navigate there from the learner management screen by selecting Skills Radar from the View column dropdown.
The Skills Radar screen displays all configured competencies. Where a learner or tutor has submitted an assessment, the scores appear against each competency. If the tutor has set goals, these are shown as a dotted line on the radar.
Hover over a bar to view the details of previous assessments.
Show history
By default, the skills radar shows the most recent assessments from the learner, tutor, and employer. To view earlier assessments and track progress over time, use the Show history toggle.
Completing a skills radar assessment
To complete an assessment, navigate to the skills radar panel within a review. The skills radar panel only appears if your organisation has configured the review to include it.
The panel displays all competencies. Where the learner has already submitted an assessment, their scores are shown.
Select a competency to open a panel on the right. From here you can add your score, a note, or attach a file in support of your assessment.
Tutors can set a goal against each competency, shown as a dotted line on the radar. Employers cannot add goals.
Select Save to record your assessment.
Note: once a learner has submitted their skills radar, they can't re-score or change it. If you want a learner to score themselves again, include the skills radar in a review.
The skills radar report on the learner dashboard
The Skills Radar Report only appears on the learner's dashboard once a tutor has fully assessed at least one competency, meaning every characteristic of that competency. A competency only appears in the report once the tutor has fully assessed it, even if the learner has assessed it. Learner scores alone don't make the report appear.
If the report isn't showing, ask the learner's tutor to assess the competencies in full.
Where the drilldown gets its data
- Scores: a skills radar item is only plotted once a tutor completes every section of the skills radar in a review. The score shown is the tutor's, averaged across all of the tutor's scores for that item. If the tutor leaves a section incomplete, that review isn't plotted.
- Date range: the dates along the bottom of the graph follow the frequency of the reviews, for example monthly or quarterly.
- Score range: the scale on the left goes up to the highest possible score in the reviews included in the graph.
Competency reports in the learner's documents
Aptem generates a competency report automatically when an administrator or tutor has assessed every characteristic of a competency as complete:
- No goal set: the highest level is selected for each characteristic.
- Goal set: the level selected is higher than the goal for each characteristic.
The report goes into the Skills Radar Reports folder in the learner's documents. Only the learner can see this folder, in Aptem Console and in Aptem Classic (Documents tile, Competencies folder). Administrators and tutors can't open it, but they can generate a report themselves from the learner's User Profile: go to Competencies, select Report and choose the assessment series to include.
