A How-To-Guide to SCORM Assets

Introduction

The SCORM Assets functionality allows you to create your content in Aptem in an effective way. SCORM Assets can be uploaded to Aptem or created from scratch within Aptem.

  1. Sign into your administrator account.
  2. Locate the tile called ‘SCORM Assets’.

  3. Once you have clicked the SCORM Assets tile, this screen provides you with a list of your existing assets to be used in the SCORM Player. You can search for items by the filter or the tags option. The list below shows you the assets that have been created/uploaded

Creating Assets

‘Create’ allows you to create an asset within Aptem.

  1. Click ‘Create’.
  2. Give your asset a name.
  3. The Asset Type gives you options to create your Asset:
    1. Text - Provides you with a box that can be used as a paragraph, please note the learners cannot type a response to your question if you use this item.
    2. Form - Allows you to add content as questions and lets you choose how your learners need to respond.
    3. Video - This functionality allows you to upload a video asset.
    4. LTI - Can be ignored.
    5. Flexible - This item allows you to build more than one of the above items to create your asset, you can create this item using one or more of the following methods:
      1. Video
      2. HTML
      3. Audio

Please note that SCORM assets in Aptem can only be created or uploaded, they cannot be duplicated.

Creating a Text Asset:

  1. Give your asset a name.
  2. Select ‘Text’ from the Asset Type list.
  3. Give your asset a tag. Tags are ways of searching for your assets, you can use existing tags or create new ones.
  4. You can upload an image for the asset by clicking ‘Upload’ and navigating to your image.
  5. In the content box you can copy and paste from an external source, create your paragraph as well as using the options like Bold, Italic, Paragraph Alignment, Bullet Points and Numbering.
  6. Once finished, click ‘Create Asset’.

Creating a Form Asset:

  1. Give your asset a name.
  2. Select ‘Form’ from the Asset Type list.
  3. Give your asset a tag. Tags are ways of searching for your assets, you can use existing tags or create new ones.
  4. Click ‘Add Content’.
  5. You will see your first text/question box appear. Here you can create your text as an assignment/question for the first part of your content, you can copy and paste from an external source, create your assignment/question as well as using the options like Bold, Italic, Clean Formatting, Inserting a hyperlink Paragraph Alignment, Bullet Points, Numbering Images and Tables. The text/question boxes can also be used for paragraphs to separate sections of the work.
  6. In the content/question type box, you can decide how your learner responds:
    1. Textbox - Gives the learner an open text box so they can type their answers, when you select this, you will need to then confirm how many Text Boxes you require for your answer.
    2. Dropdown - Lets you provide a dropdown list for your learners to choose from.
    3. Checkbox - Allows the learner to tick a box based on the right answer.
    4. Label - Can be used for Paragraphs within your Form as learners do not have the option to respond to this item.
    5. Table - Allows a learner to answer in a table format after you provide the titles.
  7. Once you have created your first text/question, you can select ‘Add Content’ to add more.
  8. Once finished, click ‘Create Asset’.

Creating a Video Asset:

  1. Give your asset a name.
  2. Select ‘Video’ from the Asset Type list.
  3. Give your asset a tag. Tags are ways of searching for your assets, you can use existing tags or create new ones.
  4. If the video you are uploading has an embedded video link, you can paste into the ‘Embed Video’ section.
  5. ‘Upload’ allows you to upload a video from by navigating to the location on your machine/device.
  6. You need to give your video a description, and you also have options like Bold, Italic, Clean Formatting, Inserting a hyperlink Paragraph Alignment, Bullet Points, Numbering Images and Tables.
  7. Once finished, click ‘Create Asset’.

Creating a Flexible Asset:

Remember, this Asset requires two or more delivery methods for this Asset to be used e.g. one audio file and HTML content

  1. Give your asset a name.
  2. Select ‘Flexible’ from the Asset Type list.
  3. Give your asset a tag. Tags are ways of searching for your assets, you can use existing tags or create new ones.
  4. ‘Audio Content’ allows you to upload audio content that is already saved on your machine/device.
  5. ‘Embed Video’ If the video you are uploading has an embedded video link, you can paste into the ‘Embed Video’ section.
  6. ‘Upload’ allows you to upload a video from by navigating to the location on your machine/device.
  7. ‘HTML Content’ lets you upload your content that has been saved as HTML.

    The HTML content must be in zipped format - to allow images, css and javascript to be included and must have index.html inside the zipped file.

  8. Once finished, click ‘Create Asset’.

Uploading Assets

‘Upload’ allows you to upload an asset that has been created externally e.g. Captivate or Articulate or any other eLearning SCORM creation system.

  1. Click ‘Upload’.
  2. Give your asset a name and select the ‘Upload Asset’ button to navigate to the item – the item must be in the form of a zip file.
  3. Generate evidence means if there are any questions/quizzes built into the SCORM paper (assuming the SCORM Asset has been created in such a way that it writes to the metadata, then you can click ‘Generate Evidence’ and we will generate a report of those questions and answers from when it’s completed. Please note that this will print anything that has been put into the metadata, so if you have not put the questions into the metadata and only put the answers as evidence, the report will only generate answers.

Attaching the SCORM Assets to your Learning Plan

Once you have created your SCORM Assets, you need to attach them to your learning plan for this to be visible to your learner.

  1. Go to your programmes tile.
  2. Select the programme that you would want to attach your SCORM Assets to.
  3. Scroll to your learning plan.
  4. Click ‘Add new Component’.
  5. From the ‘Component Type’ list, select ‘Digital learning’ (this pulls through your SCORM Assets that have been created).
  6. Give your component a name.
  7. Complete any instructions.
  8. Decide whether this component requires evidence to be uploaded to it, by ticking or unticking the box.
  9. Decide on the minimum number of submitted evidence that the learner needs to provide if required.
  10. Select your “complete by” timeframe.
  11. Upload any supporting documents for this component.
  12. Click ‘Select Assets’ to locate the SCORM Asset(s) that you have built.
  13. Click ‘Select’.
  14. Click ‘Save’, ‘Confirm’ and ‘Confirm’ once done.

FAQ

Which file format is best for generating a SCORM file?

We recommend using either the 2004 or 1.2 version.
