Admins can create, link, unlink, and version marking aid exercises directly from the Marking Aid admin area in Console. This is now the central location for exercise management, giving you greater control and allowing you to complete all maintenance tasks in one place without needing to use Programme Builder.
Who can do this: administrators with access to the Marking Aid management area and the relevant exercise management permissions.
Create and link an exercise to a component
Use this when you want to add a new marking aid exercise and link it to a programme-level component (including sub-programmes) in one step.
In Console, navigate to the Marking Aid admin area.
Select the programme, then select the component you want to link an exercise to.
Select Create new exercise. The exercise creation interface opens in the panel.
Complete the exercise details and select Save.
-
You will be asked whether you want to apply this exercise to learners already enrolled in the programme.
Select Apply to existing learners to propagate the exercise to enrolled learners.
Select Skip to apply the exercise to new enrolments only.
Select Confirm. The exercise is linked to the component.
Note: If you skip the propagation step, learners who enrolled before the exercise was linked will not have access to it. You can use the sync wizard to update existing learners manually at a later stage.
Unlink an exercise from a component
Use this when you want to remove the link between an exercise and a component.
In Console, navigate to the Marking Aid admin area.
Find the exercise you want to unlink and select it to open the details.
Select Unlink exercise.
Confirm the action when prompted.
The exercise is unlinked from the component. Learners already enrolled retain access to the exercise they were assigned. The change affects new enrolments only.
Unlinking an exercise does not remove it from existing learners' learning plans.
Create a new version of an exercise
Use this when you want to update an exercise for future enrolments, with the option to apply the change to existing learners.
In Console, navigate to the Marking Aid admin area.
Find the exercise you want to update and select it to open the details.
Select Create new version.
Make your changes to the exercise content and select Save.
-
You will be asked how you want to handle existing learners:
Select Apply to all existing learners to update everyone currently on this exercise.
Select Apply to selected learners to choose specific learners to update.
Select Skip to apply the new version to new enrolments only.
Select Confirm. The new version is saved and applied as selected.
Note: Learners you do not update will continue on their current version. This is intentional behaviour to protect existing learner data.
Navigate from Programme Builder to exercise details
When you are working in Programme Builder and need to view or edit an exercise linked to a component, you can select the exercise name to open its details directly in the Marking Aid admin area. This removes the need to search for exercises manually.
Temporary behaviour: if you create a new version of an exercise and do not save the programme in Programme Builder before navigating away, the link will point to the previous version. Save the programme after creating a new version to ensure the link reflects the latest version.
Coming change: Programme Builder exercise management
The ability to create, link, unlink, and version marking aid exercises from Programme Builder will be removed in a future release. We recommend that you:
Review which of your users currently manage marking aid exercises via Programme Builder and ensure they have the appropriate permissions to use the Marking Aid admin area in Console.
Communicate this change to tutors and administrators ahead of the update.
Help Centre articles will be updated when the change is confirmed.
